I. The north — Königsmark, the Kal'arn Massif, the Belless Land
Biome. Subarctic to arctic: tundra at the far north, dense taiga at the centre, mixed boreal forest to the south. An eight-month winter. A short, brilliant summer. An aurora-analogue in the higher latitudes, called the Dancing Choir and attributed to angelic apparitions during the Theomachy. Eternal glaciers on the Kal'arn Massif, and lakes frozen for most of the year.
Flora. Conifers dominate — white fir, northern pine, alpine cedar. Birch woods in the lower ground, gold-leaved for a very brief autumn. Orange lichen over rock, the only vegetation visible on tundra. And the Northern Mushroom, white-blue and edible, with a mild narcotic effect once used in old pagan feasts.
