The One

Eight pontiffs in seventy-seven years, an average survival of nine, and a curve nobody discusses aloud.

What the title means

It is not primus inter pares. It is ontological singularity. The One is the only human voice authorised to speak for the choir of Angels on Earth. The only one.

Official theology holds that, at the moment of a valid election, the choir of Angels recognises the elected man — by a discreet liturgical sign, a flame of the Perpetual Vigil that wavers once and steadies — and from that instant the revelational interface of the Hashmal operates through him. There is no One without angelic recognition. Without the sign, the election is void and the conclave continues.

Which is why the title is also written, in formal liturgical texts, as the One Recognised, or simply the Recognised.
