The One

What the title means

It is not "first among equals" (primus inter pares). It is ontological uniqueness. The One is the only human voice authorised to speak for the choir of the Angels on Earth. The only one.

Official theology establishes that, at the moment of a valid election, the choir of the Angels acknowledges the elect — by a discreet liturgical sign (a flame of the Perpetual Vigil flickers once and steadies) — and from then on the revelational interface of the Hashmal operates through him. There is no One without angelic acknowledgement. Without the sign, the election is annulled and the conclave continues.

That is why the title is also written, in formal liturgical texts, as The One Acknowledged or simply The Acknowledged.

How one arrives at the One

• A vote by two thirds. Each cardinal votes with a consecrated ballot that is burned after each round (white ash = the smoke of holy smoke = a candidate elected; black ash = no election, next round).
• When two thirds converge, the candidate is led in silence to the Perpetual Vigil in the Cathedral of the Choir in Aurum Roma. The Cardinal-Electors accompany him but do not speak.
• The candidate stands before the 7 eternal candles of the Archangels. If one of the flames flickers once and steadies, the Recognition has occurred. The candidate is declared The One.
• If no flame flickers, the candidate is rejected by Heaven. He returns to the condition of cardinal. The conclave begins again with his definitive exclusion. Angelic rejections are rare and canonical — there is record of three, all in a year of a real conclave: the would-be Reformatus (1837), the would-be Hashmalian (1862), the would-be Inquisitor (1882). A rejected man does not enter the line of succession, because he never came to be One.
• Once accepted, the One takes a regnal name — he no longer uses his baptismal name. Canonical lineages of name: Aurelianus, Hashmalian, Coronatus, Reformatus, Inquisitor, Sapiens, Lumen (rare, the last in 1750-1780, before the Cataclysm).

Duration in office

• For life in principle. Resignation is theologically unthinkable — the One cannot "cease to be One" while he lives, because the angelic interface goes on operating in him.
• But: the One is deposed when the Recognition reverses. The reversal is detected by the White Mediums who serve the Vigil — one of the flames of the Archangels begins to flicker irregularly again. When that happens, the Conclave is summoned in extraordinary session and the One is declared Unfaced (fallen from recognition).
• Canonical cases: two. And the first of them is an official lie that still stands in 1890:
  • Coronatus I (1875) — the Curia publishes death by angelic exhaustion. The truth recorded in a reserved minute is that the candle began to flicker irregularly in February, the extraordinary Conclave declared him Unfaced in March, and he died in confinement three months later. He still appears in the official line of succession with the whole of his term. A living iceberg — there are people in 1890 who know.
  • Coronatus IV (1882) — Unfaced in six weeks, in the year of the three conclaves. His name is not cited in any public document.
• Because of the weight of the interface, most Ones die early. Average survival on the throne: 9 years. Only two Ones passed twenty years in office: Aurelianus I (24 years) and Hashmalian I (25 years) — the two institutional founders, and nobody after them. Physiological reason: angelic contact wears out the body (the same mechanics as the White Mediums and the illuminated clerics, on a larger scale). Unconfirmed canonical reason: the Angels speak less with every generation, and the little they say costs more.
