Everybody already put salt at the door.
It is the thing this account needs understood before all the rest, because without it the history is not a discovery — it is an absurdity.
In Pradel, and throughout the massif, and in half the Christian villages of the continent, a line of salt had been laid for centuries on the threshold, the sill and the byre lintel. Against the strigoi that returns to the village where it was born. Against the drude that sits on the chest of the sleeper. Against whatever walks by night and has no fixed name.
