Heaven and Hell

Two complete hierarchies, mirrored in structure, opposed in function. Both politically fragmented after the Cataclysm. Both operate as specular grimdark models: as bureaucratic and as capable of internal betrayal as the Clerical Order and the Pactuary Heptarchy.

I. HEAVEN — The Nine Choirs

A canonical adaptation of the scheme of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite (5th/6th century), the treatise Celestial Hierarchy. Reorganised into three triads, nine choirs, with functions and silences canonical to the universe of the project.

Supreme Triad — Those Who See God Directly

1. Seraphim (seraphim)

• "The Burning Ones". The choir of flaming love. Six wings. Direct sight of the Face.
• Function in the universe: pure contemplation. They have not manifested to humans since before the Cataclysm. Known only by tradition.
• Silence: total since 1780. Reason: pending (iceberg-lore).

2. Cherubim (cherubim)

• "The Fully Watchful". The choir of divine knowledge. Four faces, four wings.
• Function in the universe: guardians of the mysteries. The mystical tradition (Ezekiel) describes them at the divine chariot. Note: the Hashmal choir appears in the vision of the Cherubim in Ezekiel — some theologians of the Order maintain that the Hashmal is not an independent intermediate choir, but an operative manifestation of the Cherubim. An open theological schism.
• Silence: total since before the Cataclysm.

3. Thrones (thrones / ophanim)

• "Those Who Carry the Throne". In some traditions, the Ophanim ("Wheels" — spheres of eyes). The choir of divine judgement.
• Function in the universe: traditionally they sustain cosmic justice. Silent since the Cataclysm.
• Silence: total. A disturbing theological implication: if the Thrones of judgement fall silent, who judges?

Intermediate Triad — Those Who Govern the Cosmos

4. Dominions (dominationes / kyriotetes)

• "The Lords". The choir of cosmic government. They receive orders from the Thrones and transmit them downward.
• Function in the universe: traditionally they regulate the structure of the world (seasons, tides, cycles). Silent.
• Silence: partial. There are rare records of apparitions in dreams to mystics — always brief, always incomprehensible.

5. Virtues (virtutes / dynameis)

• "The Mighty". The choir of physical miracles.
• Function in the universe: agents of the traditional miracle (immediate cure, multiplication of bread, stopping of fire). They still manifest today in canonical miracles — but with a much reduced frequency compared with the pre-Cataclysm age. The Order maintains a pontifical commission (Commission of Confirmed Miracles) that examines and canonises miracles attributed to Virtues.
• Communication: indirect. One does not "speak" with a Virtue; the Virtue acts in answer to prayer channelled through an intercessory saint.

6. Powers (kept in the original Pseudo-Dionysius position)

The canonical numbering of the project is therefore:

1. Seraphim → 2. Cherubim → 3. Thrones → 4. Dominions → 5. Virtues → 6. Powers → 7. Principalities → 8. Archangels → 9. Angels (within which the Hashmal operates).

6.5. Notes on the Powers (already listed above as choir 6)

• "The Powers". The warrior choir of heaven — it fights the demonic forces on the cosmic field.
• Function in the universe: cosmic combat against Hell, active since the Cataclysm. But they do not manifest to humans. Their activity can only be inferred indirectly (inexplicable victories on human fronts; demons suddenly withdrawing; storms that scatter Pactuary Hosts).
• Official theology maintains that the Powers are fighting a war parallel to the human one — and that humanity will never see it.

Lower Triad — Those Who Serve the World

8. Principalities (principatus / archai)

• "The Princes". The choir that patronises nations and cities. Every State, every fortress-city, every realm, in theory, has a guardian Principality.
• Function in the universe: traditionally, each Principality interceded for its nation. Almost total silence since the Cataclysm — nations report having lost their particular Principalities. Some cities have chapels dedicated to the "Forgotten Principality". The Order officially denies that Principalities have died or abandoned anyone — it maintains that they have merely fallen silent under trial.
• Grimdark implication: the nations are alone. There is no longer an "angel of Rome" or an "angel of Cracow".

8. Archangels (archangeloi)

• "The Great Messengers". The choir of the great Seven (in the Enochic-equivalent tradition).
  1. Mikahel — war. Captain of the Powers by delegation. He manifests more frequently to Königsmark than to the Clerical Order (a cause of geopolitical tension). Patron of the Knights of the Seal.
  2. Gabriah — annunciation, prophecy. He manifests in visions to White Mediums.
  3. Rafalim — healing, travel. Patron of the Hospitallers of the Hashmal.
  4. Urial — fire, wisdom. Patron of the State of Schola Coronata.
  5. Selaphiel — prayer, intercession. Patron of the contemplatives of the Order of the Ash.
  6. Yeduhel — praise, the judgement of the just. Patron of pontifical choral liturgy.
  7. Barukhiel — blessings. Patron of the lesser sacramentals.

Internal subdivisions of the choir of the Angels

a) Common Angels

• Individual messengers. Personal guardian angels. Appearances in popular folklore (an angel appearing to a dying man, to a soldier in the field, to a lost child).
• Function: comfort, warning, discreet vengeance.
• The Order maintains a Commission of the Angels that collects popular testimonies.

b) The Order of the Hashmal — technical-revelational Angels

A specialised subgroup of the choir of the Angels, with the unique function of technical and mineralogical revelation. The category that defines the economy, the industry and the war of the universe.
