When the earth shook and the forgotten prisons beneath the mountains opened, Hell came up — and the world learned, in one generation, that salvation had a fixed price and a single supplier.
The event
Between 1780 and 1786 (aesthetic analogue: the late Georgian era, the Enlightenment at its peak), a wave of earthquakes broke, one a year and from east to west, a network of ancient prisons hidden beneath the ranges of Cross. Those prisons — older than writing, ignored by official theology until then — contained:
- Demons of the first sealing (bound by the angelic choirs at the beginning of the world).
- Fallen Watchers (rebel angels of the Enochic tradition, who taught men the forbidden arts; bound when their Nephilim children were washed away by the flood).
- Entities with no canonical name — referred to in inquisitorial text only as "the Hushed".
The original sealing was angelic work. Who broke it — or what broke it — is the first iceberg-question of the universe. Official theology calls the event the Cataclysm of the Seals. Heretical theology calls it the Awakening. The common people call it the Day the Earth Screamed.
