Königsmark — 1852 to 1860 — the Age of the Forge
Historical context
Königsmark is the only kingdom on the continent of Cross where deposing the king is heresy by definition.
Not as rhetoric. Structurally. Since the Northern Schism, the Royal Church of the North has been presided over by the Monarch in person: it is he who ordains the kingdom's priests, it is under his authority that mineral is consecrated, and it is to him — not to the One of Aurum Roma, whom the North does not recognise — that the entire sacramental hierarchy answers, from the Kal'arn Massif to the northern sea. A noble who conspires against the Crown is not committing a political crime. He is attacking the only source of valid sacrament within nine hundred kilometres.
The House of Mikaelvald has reigned since 1631 and is the longest continuous line in the canon. It refounded itself in 1789, in the middle of the Age of Ash, when the kingdom might simply have ceased to exist. Its motto is a single word: We wait.
